What a phone photo actually carries
A camera writes a block called EXIF inside the image file. It is not visible when you look at the picture and nothing warns you it exists, but it travels with the file every time it is copied, attached or shared. A typical phone photo carries the make and model, the date and time to the second, exposure settings, often the lens, sometimes the camera body's serial number, and — unless location is switched off for the camera — the GPS coordinates of the spot where you stood.
Those coordinates are the part worth caring about. A few metres is enough to identify a house. A set of photos taken at home over a year identifies the house beyond doubt, and a serial number links every photo a camera has ever taken to the same owner.
Where it does and does not get stripped for you
Large platforms generally remove EXIF when they process an upload: Facebook, Instagram and X all do. That creates a false sense of safety, because the places people share photos most casually do not. Email attachments, direct messages, cloud storage links, marketplace listings, rental applications, insurance claims and most forums pass the original file straight through.
The rule of thumb: if you attached the file rather than uploaded it to a large social platform, assume everything is still in it.
Remove the location, or remove everything
These are different jobs. The coordinates identify where you live; the aperture and shutter speed are genuinely useful and say nothing about you. Removing only the location leaves a photograph that a photographer can still learn from, which is why it is offered separately rather than as an all-or-nothing switch.
The location removal works by disconnecting the GPS block from the rest of the file rather than rebuilding the metadata, so nothing else is disturbed, no manufacturer's private fields are corrupted, and the file comes out exactly the same size. Removing everything drops EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments, and keeps the ICC colour profile — that one describes how to interpret the colours, and dropping it makes a wide-gamut photo look flat.
No pixels are touched
Metadata lives in a separate part of the file from the image itself, so removing it is a deletion, not a re-encode. The image that comes out is bit-for-bit the same picture. This is the one operation on this site with no quality trade-off to weigh at all.

What is EXIF data, and why does my photo have it?
EXIF is a block of information the camera writes inside the image file: the make and model, the date and time to the second, the exposure settings, often the lens and the camera body’s serial number, and on a phone almost always the GPS coordinates. Cameras record it automatically. Nothing warns you it is there, and it travels with the file wherever you send it.
Do photos really contain my location?

Does posting a photo online share my location?
It depends where. Facebook, Instagram and X strip EXIF when they process an upload. Can I remove the location but keep the camera settings?
Yes, and it is usually the right choice. The coordinates are the part that identifies where you live or work; the aperture and shutter speed are useful and harmless. Does removing metadata change the image?

Is the colour profile removed too?
No, deliberately. The ICC colour profile describes how to interpret the colours, and dropping it makes a wide-gamut photo look visibly flat and wrong. It contains nothing about you, so it stays.
Is my photo uploaded to check it?
No, and that is the point. Every other tool of this kind asks you to upload the photo to a server so it can remove the coordinates — which means handing over the coordinates in order to delete them. Here the file is read by this page on your own device. You can disconnect from the internet and it still works.
