AVIF is the smallest of the widely supported formats, routinely half the size of a JPEG at the same quality — so its quality numbers are not comparable, and 50 to 60 already looks excellent.

What compressing AVIF actually does

AVIF is already the most efficient image format in general use, so recompressing one is usually about hitting a specific limit rather than chasing a general saving. The lever is quality, and AVIF holds together at settings that would visibly wreck a JPEG — quality 50 is often perfectly acceptable where JPEG at 50 is a blocky mess.

Bear in mind that re-encoding an AVIF means compressing an already-compressed image, and AVIF encoding is slow. If you still have whatever the AVIF was made from, going back to that original gives a better result at the same size and takes less time.

Getting a good result

  • AVIF degrades far more gracefully than JPEG. Quality 50–60 is genuinely usable, which is where its size advantage really shows.
  • Encoding is slow by design — the codec searches a very large space to find the smallest result. Several seconds for a large image is normal, not a fault.
  • Above about quality 90 AVIF loses its advantage and can produce files larger than JPEG. Its strength is the middle of the range.
  • If the image needs to open outside a browser, convert it to JPEG instead of compressing — a lot of software still cannot read AVIF at all.

Hitting an exact file size

Upload forms, government portals and job applications frequently demand a file "under 200KB" and reject anything over it, without telling you by how much. Tick Aim for a specific file size and BriskFile searches for the highest quality that still fits, re-encoding up to eight times to find it.

The result is always under your limit, not near it. A file three kilobytes over the cap is rejected exactly as firmly as one three megabytes over.

Why is compressing AVIF so slow?

AVIF uses the AV1 video codec, which searches a very large space of possible encodings to find the smallest output. That search is exactly what produces the size advantage, and it is expensive. Lower effort settings trade some of the saving back for speed.

Should I recompress an AVIF or go back to the original?

Go back to the original if you have it. Recompressing means the encoder works from an image that has already had detail removed, so artefacts compound and the result is worse than encoding once from the source.
