JPEG XL and JPEG, and why you would move between them

JPEG XL is a genuinely good format that arrived at a bad moment. It compresses better than JPEG, supports both lossy and lossless, handles wide colour and high bit depths, and was designed as an outright replacement for the format it is named after. Then Chrome removed support in 2023, which left it in an unusual position: Apple ships it in Safari and in the iPhone camera pipeline, and most of the rest of the world cannot open it.

So a .jxl file today is usually something that came off newer Apple hardware, or from someone who was optimistic about where the web was going. Converting to JPEG is what makes it openable by everything else, at the cost of the efficiency that made JPEG XL interesting.

Things that catch people out

  • JPEG XL can store a JPEG losslessly and reverse the process exactly, which is one of its best features. That is not what happens here: the image is decoded to pixels and re-encoded as a new JPEG, so this is a fresh lossy pass rather than an exact restoration.
  • JPEG has no transparency. A JPEG XL with an alpha channel will have it composited away against a background colour.
  • The JPEG will usually be larger than the JPEG XL — often noticeably so, since better compression was the point of the format.
  • High bit depth and wide colour gamut are reduced to standard 8-bit JPEG, which is visible in smooth gradients like skies.

Why can my browser not open a .jxl file?

Chrome shipped JPEG XL behind a flag and then removed it entirely in 2023, and Firefox never enabled it by default. Safari supports it from version 17. So on most machines the browser simply will not display the file, which is usually how people end up converting it.

Is JPEG XL better than JPEG?

Technically, clearly yes — smaller at the same quality, with lossless and high-bit-depth modes JPEG cannot do. In practice a format is only as good as the software that reads it, and on that measure JPEG is still far ahead.
