Resize an image to 100KB

Drop an image and it comes back under 100KB, at the largest sensible size that fits.

Reduce the dimensions first, then compress. A photo held at full resolution has to have its quality destroyed to reach 100KB; reduced to about 1600 pixels on the longest edge, the same budget produces a picture that still looks right. Why the form asked for this

A hundred kilobytes is enough for a photograph to still look like one, provided the dimensions are sensible. The two work together: at 1600 pixels on the longest edge, 100KB is a comfortable budget; at 4000 pixels it is not remotely enough and the result shows it.

Dimensions first, quality second

This is the part almost every other tool on this subject skips, and it is the whole answer. File size follows the number of pixels, and pixel count follows the square of the dimensions — so halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the data before any compression is applied at all.

A twelve-megapixel photo forced to 100KB at full resolution has roughly 0.009 bytes per pixel to work with, which is why the result looks like a mosaic. Reduced to about 1600 pixels on the longest edge first, each remaining pixel gets a far larger share, and the picture survives.

Searching beats guessing

Choosing a quality by eye means one of two failures: overshooting the limit and being rejected again, or landing far underneath it and throwing away quality nobody asked you to lose. BriskFile searches for the highest quality that still fits, and only ever keeps a result that is genuinely under the number.

Where a file cannot reach the target at any usable setting, it says so plainly rather than returning something over the limit or something unrecognisable. A file one kilobyte too large fails the form exactly as completely as one twice the size.

The photographs people put through a size limit are identity documents, passport photographs, signatures and application portraits. They are the last files worth handing to an unknown server to save a few kilobytes. This runs entirely in the page — you can disconnect from the network and it still works.

Questions

Why does my photo have to be under 100KB?

Because the form says so, and almost none of them explain why. Usually it is a storage or bandwidth limit set years ago and never revisited. The requirement is arbitrary from your side, which is why it is worth having a tool that simply hits the number rather than making you guess at quality settings.

Why is the image smaller than the one I put in?

Because a 100KB file cannot sensibly hold twelve megapixels. Squeezing full resolution into that budget means destroying the quality of every pixel, and the result looks like a mosaic. BriskFile reduces the longest edge to about 1600 pixels first, then finds the highest quality that fits — which produces a picture that still looks like a photograph.

Will it always come in under the limit?

Yes. The search only ever keeps a result that is genuinely under the target, and it reports honestly if the file cannot get there at all rather than handing you something marginally over. A file that is one kilobyte too big fails the form just as completely as one that is double.

How long does it take?

Under a second for a typical phone photo on a laptop, and a few seconds on a modest phone. The work happens on your own device, so there is no queue and no upload to wait for.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It is processed entirely in this page. That matters for these forms in particular, because the photo being resized is usually an identity document, a passport photograph or a signature — the last things worth handing to an unknown server to save a few kilobytes.
