JPEG and WebP, and why you would move between them

WebP typically produces a file 25–35% smaller than a JPEG at the same visible quality, and every browser in current use has supported it since 2020 — including Safari, which was the long-standing holdout. For images on a website, this is close to free performance: the same picture, a third less to download, and images are usually the largest thing on a page.

It is worth being clear about where WebP does not help. Files you email to people, upload to older systems, or send to a print shop are better off as JPEG, because WebP support outside browsers is still patchy. WebP is a format for the web, and the name is not an accident.

Things that catch people out

  • Re-encoding a JPEG to WebP means compressing an already-compressed image. Some artefacts carry over. Starting from the original file rather than an already-saved JPEG gives a noticeably better result.
  • Windows Photo Viewer, older versions of Office, and much print software still will not open WebP. It is a web format first.
  • WebP’s lossy mode always uses 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, so strongly saturated reds against dark backgrounds can shift slightly. It is rarely visible in photographs and occasionally visible in graphics.
  • At quality settings above about 90, WebP can produce larger files than JPEG. The saving is real in the 70–85 range, which is where you should be anyway.

Do all browsers support WebP now?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and every mobile browser in current use support it. Safari added support in version 14, released in 2020, which is the point at which it became safe to use without a JPEG fallback.

Should I use WebP or AVIF?

AVIF compresses better — often another 20% smaller than WebP — but encodes far more slowly and support in software outside browsers is thinner. WebP is the safe default; AVIF is worth it when you are serving a lot of traffic and can afford the encode time.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes, in both lossy and lossless modes. That is one of its genuine advantages over JPEG, and it means a transparent PNG can become a WebP without becoming a much larger file.
