PNG and WebP, and why you would move between them
This is the conversion that pays off most reliably on the web. WebP’s lossless mode is typically 25–30% smaller than an optimised PNG while being pixel-identical, and its lossy mode supports transparency — something JPEG cannot do at all. A transparent logo that has to be a PNG today can be a much smaller WebP instead.
For photographic PNGs the saving is far larger still, because you can move to lossy compression and keep the alpha channel. A screenshot with a drop shadow, a product cut-out, a UI mockup: all of these are cases where PNG has been the only option and WebP is simply better.
Things that catch people out
- Lossy WebP keeps the alpha channel but compresses it separately, and hard-edged cutouts can pick up a faint halo. If the edges matter, use lossless mode.
- Very small images — icons under about 64 pixels — sometimes come out larger as WebP because of container overhead. Check before replacing them.
- WebP is limited to 16383 pixels in either direction. Very tall stitched screenshots and panoramas can exceed that and have to stay as PNG.

Is lossless WebP really smaller than PNG?
Usually, yes — around 25% smaller than a PNG that has already been through an optimiser like oxipng, and much more against an unoptimised one. The pixels are identical either way.
Does WebP keep my transparent background?
Yes, in both modes. This is the main reason to prefer WebP over JPEG for logos and cutouts: you get real compression without losing the alpha channel.
