PNG and AVIF, and why you would move between them
For a PNG that is going on a website, AVIF is usually the largest single saving available. A photographic PNG can drop by 90% or more; even a graphic with flat colour and transparency typically halves against an optimised PNG, because AVIF handles both alpha and flat regions well.
The trade is encoding time and software support. Encoding takes seconds rather than milliseconds, and outside browsers a good deal of software still cannot read AVIF. For images you encode once and serve millions of times, that is an easy trade; for anything else it is worth thinking about.
Things that catch people out
- AVIF encoding is slow. A large PNG can take several seconds, and higher effort settings take considerably longer.
- AVIF supports transparency well, but lossy mode can soften a hard-edged cutout very slightly. Check logos and icons at full size before shipping.
- For small icons and simple graphics, an optimised PNG or lossless WebP can still win. AVIF has container overhead that a 32×32 icon cannot amortise.

Does AVIF support transparency?
Yes, including partial transparency, and it compresses the alpha channel efficiently. That makes it a genuine replacement for transparent PNGs rather than a photo-only format.
Will AVIF work in every browser?
In every current one, yes — Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge all support it. Serve it inside a <picture> element with a WebP or JPEG fallback to cover older versions and non-browser software.
